Well, I've got a coolant smell in the cab, and the defroster simply makes it fog up so badly I can't see out the window.

How exercise I access the heater core to put in a new 1?

You need to remove the within identify of the heater.
The blots for it are outside under the hood. three or 4 threaded rods stick out and hold the fan/ac assembly on on the outside. Once all bolts undone disconnect heater hoses and suck out heater cadre. Then wiggle the unit out from nether the nuance, connecting all vacuum lines and cables.
Replace the heater core, clean, and installation is reverse of removal.

It is a pretty easy job on these trucks, compared to some vehicles. You will want to remove the glove box door and inner box, to let admission to the heater core cover from within the cab. Then equally mentioned, you will unbolt the cover from the nether-hood side. The Haynes manuals have a good clarification of what y'all can do with the control cables, I don't recall the steps, but they were outlined well in there.

Removing the inner cover volition as well betrayal the blend-door, then you can verify information technology's operation, and clean as req'd. All in all, it'due south perhaps a couple hour task at the most. Mayhap a scrap longer if your truck has A/C, due to access underhood.

Practiced Luck!

Last fourth dimension I did that my Haynes manual said to pull the inner fender well loose. <shrug?> Information technology worked. But that was a 1998 manual on a 1976 model...

Information technology was a easy. Remove the hoses, unbolt the 3 nuts on the engine side of firewall, undo one screw to the defroster and one screw nether the glove box (also removed), undo the clips and washed.

The only PITA was that it seems GM had to employ at least 3 sizes of both Royal and Metric screws to do the job. Thank you for the tips, all!

I've got to modify my heater core on my 82 westward/AC, and I'yard not sure which nuts to undo on the engine compartment side.

Does the whole evaporator/blower case neeed to be removed?

Information technology'south the nuts that hold the evaporator comprehend on. Y'all don't need to remove the cover, just the nuts. The studs that these basics are on are what agree the heater box to the firewall.

Information technology isn't that bad of a chore, one time you find all the hidden screws(and screws is a very appropriate proper noun)

I had a clear advantage though. The engine compartment is empty.

Any you exercise, DON'T supervene upon the heater core with an ALUMINUM one. It's all they told me they carried, and that the COPPER ones were't available whatever longer (???), So, I installed the ALUMINUM one. Does't rut upward worth a ding-dang!!!! I establish a NOS COPPER one on E-Bay, and one of these days, I'm recycling the ALUMINUM 1 with the rest of the bit metals. JMO. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
